Chiquita Canyon Landfill Air Monitoring
Giving access to environmental data in an easy fashion.
Challenge
My clients were in the federal government that were looking to share monitoring data to the public in Chiquita Canyon Landfill in northwestern Los Angeles County, California. Levels of chemicals (odor-causing and toxic air pollutants) being released into the air are actively monitored onsite and in the nearby communities, and potential health risks are continually being evaluated. For the public to understand the air monitoring response work and its progress, the client wanted to find ways for the public to view and download hourly air monitoring data.
Role
I was the UX/UI Designer.
Team
UI/UX Designer - Yury Higuchi
Project Manager - Solana Foo
Front End Developer - Ma Long
Backend Engineer - Frank Campbell
Timeline
This was a 2-week sprint for the design for a project at Weston Solutions Inc. This is almost ready to launch.
Design
The goal of the design was to create a way to display chemical data and to download it easily. To achieve this, the design direction included:
-
map view of the air monitoring stations
-
charts that display the information over time
-
chart view and download page
After two iterations of client feedback, the final prototype is shown below.

Style Guide
I created a quick style guide for the engineers to match the branding of the website but slightly create a different identity for the two pages.
Impact & Reflection
IMPACT
This webpage is in the final stages and almost ready to go live in public.
While this page is not live yet, the design was:
-
Simple and visually pleasing - The interactive map has very easy symbology and navigation for different audiences.
-
Easy to understand data visualization - Listing hourly readings of chemicals may seem complicated but our team has made it easy to understand using charts and maps.
-
Separate page with step-by-step instructions to download the data displayed.
REFLECTION
Collaborating with the team's engineers is key. Advocating for certain design aspects, albeit small elements may seem unnecessary, will help users understand potential next steps in the user flow.
If budget allowed, it would've been great to create a mobile version for the page.
